October is the month when many people enjoy celebrating and having fun with the scary and the spooky. Adults and children alike enjoy dressing up in all manner of costumes and going to various celebrations including parties and trick-or-treating, tell ghost stories, watch horror movies and eat frightening (but tasty!) snacks. Another fun activity that many people forget about during the Halloween season is doing family history. Some of the spookiest ghost stories are from times before now. It can be fun to learn all about your family and find out if your personal history has any interesting or scary ghost stories!
Family-Friendly Ghost Stories
Not all ghost stories have to be scary, but they are always exciting. Learning about the spirits of the family members that have come before you can be a great way to feel connected. We at Heritage Consulting offer excellent options that will allow you to learn more about the real ghost stories of your family’s past. Reach out to us for more information. However, if you are simply looking for some fun ghost stories to tell around a campfire, we’ve compiled a few kid-friendly stories you can tell below.
Two Heads
If you’re looking for a funny scary story, you might tell the Two Heads story. This story revolves around a taxi driver who picks up a man who is acting suspiciously. The man puts his things in the trunk and gets in the back of the taxi. The taxi driver smells something strange as he tries to make small talk with the man.
Once they get to the airport, the man in the back seat gets a phone call and seems rather preoccupied so the taxi driver gets out of the car. The taxi driver pulls the man’s luggage from the trunk only to smell the strange odor again. So the taxi driver opens the bag as his passenger gets out of the car right behind him, only to find- rotting heads of cabbage!
The Broom Town Curse
If you are looking for a more historical scary story, you may choose to go with the Broom Town Curse story. The Broom Curse is set in a mid-1800s settlement that is haunted by ghosts that died in a Civil War Battle. There is said to be hauntings within the community and the surrounding area, up to ten miles away.
Make-Up One of Your Own!
There are all sorts of other scary stories that have been recycled over the years. For more stories like the ones above, you can check here. However, many people like to create scary stories of their own. It can be a fun activity for your kids, especially if they are in their teen years.
Have each member of your family come up with a story and then spend an evening roasting marshmallows over the fire and taking turns scaring everyone in the group. You may even consider doing some family history for yourself so that you can find a real ghost story to scare your family with!
